Dharma & Ahimsa

23. Dharma & Ahimsa: The Highest Duty

"Is being vegetarian really a religious requirement?" Across traditions, the answer is often "Yes" at the highest level of practice.

Scriptural Quote

Mahabharata, Anusasana Parva: "Ahimsa paramo dharmah" — Non-violence is the highest duty. There is no duty higher than being kind to all living entities.

Moral Principle

Dharma is the natural law of the soul. The soul's nature is to love and serve, not to kill and consume. By practicing Ahimsa, we align our actions with our true spiritual identity.

Scientific Reason

Compassion is not just a "feeling"—it is a biological capacity for empathy that differentiates us from lower species. Strengthening this capacity through our dietary choices is a key part of human mental evolution.

Psychological Reason

Living in alignment with Dharma brings a deep sense of internal peace (Shanti) and integrity. The conflict between a spiritual heart and a violent plate is resolved.
