The Cancer Risk
21. The Cancer Risk: Processing Death
"Can meat actually cause cancer?" The World Health Organization (WHO) has provided a definitive answer.
Scientific Reason
In 2015, the WHO classified processed meats (bacon, ham, sausages) as Group 1 carcinogens—the same category as tobacco and asbestos. Red meat was classified as "probably carcinogenic" to humans. The link to colorectal, pancreatic, and prostate cancers is significant.
Medical Insight
Meats often contain heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (formed during cooking), which damage DNA and trigger cancerous growths. Plant foods, conversely, are packed with phytonutrients that actively protect cells from damage.
Moral Principle
Continuing to promote a product known to cause terminal illness, especially to children in schools, is an ethical failure of the highest order.
Psychology
Facing the mortality risk associated with certain foods helps break the psychological "denial" that often keeps us stuck in unhealthy habits.
