Why No Onion & Garlic

Bodily Health vs. Spiritual Consciousness: The Higher Priority

19. Bodily Health vs. Spiritual Consciousness: The Higher Priority

The Common Objection

"If science proves that garlic has specific physiological benefits, shouldn't bodily health take precedence over spiritual rules?"

What Is the Ultimate Purpose of Human Life?

The Vedanta-sutra (1.1.1) opens with the solemn declaration: "athāto brahma jijñāsā" "Now, therefore, having attained this rare human form of life, one must inquire into the Absolute Truth."

Human life is not meant merely for eating, sleeping, mating, and defending like animals. Even if an animal maintains a flawless biological lipid profile, it remains bound to the cycle of repeated birth and death (samsara).

The human body is an instrument for self-realization. Its highest purpose is to awaken our eternal, loving relationship with Bhagavan Sri Krishna.

The Hierarchy of Koshas (Sheaths of Existence)

According to the Taittiriya Upanishad (Chapter 2), human existence is structured in five layers (pancha-koshas):

  1. Annamaya-kosha: The gross physical body sustained by food.
  2. Pranamaya-kosha: The physiological life energy and vital air.
  3. Manomaya-kosha: The sensory mind and emotions.
  4. Vijnanamaya-kosha: The intellect, discernment, and spiritual wisdom.
  5. Anandamaya-kosha: The soul's constitutional bliss in loving communion with God.

Material science deals exclusively with the lowest sheath (Annamaya). It is willing to pollute the higher sheaths of intellect and spiritual consciousness (Vijnanamaya & Anandamaya) with tamasic compounds just to stimulate a physical blood vessel.

Intelligent Prioritization

True wisdom means caring for the gross body adequately with pure, sattvik foods so that it can serve the higher spiritual purpose of the soul. We do not destroy the temple to polish the doorstep. Devotees prioritize eternal spiritual consciousness over temporary material stimulation.
