Why No Onion & Garlic

Handling Social Situations, Dining Out, and Family Pressure

15. Handling Social Situations, Dining Out, and Family Pressure

The Common Challenge

"When I visit family, attend corporate dinners, or travel with non-devotee friends, almost every dish contains onion and garlic. How do I navigate these social pressures without offending my hosts or acting self-righteous?"

1. The Mood of Humility, Not Superiority

Never look down upon family members or colleagues because they eat onions or garlic. Remember that before coming to Krishna consciousness, we also ate whatever we liked. Maintain genuine warmth, humility, and kindness. A devotee is recognized by their gentle behavior, not by their dietary arrogance.

2. Practical Tips for Dining Out

  • Inform in Advance: When attending weddings, corporate retreats, or family dinners, politely mention in advance: "I follow a sattvik / yogic dietary discipline that avoids onions and garlic." Most caterers and modern restaurants are accustomed to dietary preferences (such as Jain, vegan, or allergy-friendly options) and are happy to accommodate.
  • Seek Jain or Pure Sattvik Options: In Indian restaurants, asking for "Jain preparation" ensures that the food is cooked without onion, garlic, or root alliums.
  • Opt for Simple, Naturally Pure Dishes: If customized hot food is unavailable, choose fresh cut fruits, dry fruits, steamed rice, plain yogurt, or fresh salads with lemon and salt.

3. Traveling and Hospitality

  • Carry Your Own Prasadam: When traveling on trains, flights, or road trips, pack delicious homemade prasadam—such as puris, mathri, nuts, fruits, and sweets—so you are never forced to compromise out of hunger.
  • Cook for Your Family: The best way to win over hesitant family members is to cook exquisite, flavorful sattvik feasts for them! When they taste velvety paneer makhani, fragrant jeera pulao, crispy samosas, and rich gulab jamuns made without a trace of onion or garlic, their doubts will vanish naturally.
