Principle 10

No Tasting

No Tasting: Selfless Service First

In a standard kitchen, tasting for seasoning is common. In a Krishna Conscious kitchen, we refrain from tasting until the food has been offered.

The Philosophy

The Lord is the first to enjoy the meal. Tasting it beforehand is seen as 'taking' for oneself what should be given first to the Divine. It is a practice of self-control and selfless service.

In the Kitchen

  • Smell and Sight: Developing the skill to judge the balance of spices through aroma and visual cues.
  • Consistency: Following tested recipes carefully to ensure quality without tasting.

Spiritual Benefits

This practice builds humility and reminds the cook that we are servants, not the primary masters or enjoyers of the material world.
