Vitamin B12 & Nutrition
8. Vitamin B12 & Nutrition: Navigating the Science
"Vegetarians always have Vitamin B12 deficiency." This is a common nutritional challenge used to discredit plant-based living.
Scientific Reason
B12 is produced by bacteria in soil and water, not by animals themselves. In our hyper-sanitized modern world, we wash all bacteria off our produce, which is why we (and even factory-farmed animals) often need supplements. Animals in factory farms are often injected with B12 supplements themselves.
Medical Insight
It is much safer and more efficient to take a B12 supplement directly or eat fortified foods than to cycle it through an animal's body and consume it along with cholesterol and saturated fat.
Moral Principle
Taking a simple, small tablet or drinking fortified plant milk is a minute effort compared to the massive violence of the meat industry.
Psychological Reason
Nutritional fear is often used as an excuse to avoid changing habits. With basic knowledge, a vegetarian diet is statistically healthier across almost all metrics, including longevity and lower rates of chronic disease.
