The Taste Fallacy
12. The Taste Fallacy: Pleasure vs. Principle
"But meat just tastes too good to give up." This is the most honest, yet most selfish, reason for meat-eating.
The Moral Principle
Should our temporary sensory pleasure (lasting about 15 minutes of a meal) outweigh the entire life and death of a sentient being? Moral integrity requires us to value life over luxury.
Scientific Reason
Taste buds are highly adaptable. Within three weeks of shifting to a plant-based diet, the palate becomes more sensitive to the nuanced flavors of fruits, vegetables, and grains. The "craving" for meat is often a craving for the fats and salts added to it.
Scriptural Reason
Spiritual life is defined by Tapogunam—the ability to regulate the senses for a higher purpose. Giving up a destructive taste for the sake of compassion is a primary step in spiritual growth.
Psychological Reason
Overcoming the addiction to taste builds mental strength (willpower). It moves us from a "reactive" life of impulse to a "proactive" life of values.
