Why No Onion & Garlic • Part 9

Neurological Research and Desynchronization of Brain Waves

9. Neurological Research and Desynchronization of Brain Waves

The Neophyte & Critic Objection

"Is there any contemporary neuroscientific or biochemical evidence demonstrating that garlic impairs mental concentration or alters brain wave activity?"

The Clinical Research of Dr. Robert C. Beck

During the 1980s and 1990s, Dr. Robert C. Beck, D.Sc., a prominent American biomedical engineer and pioneer of electrotherapy and biofeedback, conducted clinical studies on human brain wave synchronization.

While conducting EEG (electroencephalogram) research on human subjects in flight simulation environments, Dr. Beck uncovered an alarming phenomenon:

  1. Penetration of the Blood-Brain Barrier: Garlic contains the sulphone hydroxyl ion, a volatile, highly permeating organic compound that freely crosses the protective blood-brain barrier.
  2. Desynchronization of Hemispheres: Consuming garlic caused noticeable desynchronization between the left and right cerebral hemispheres, disrupting natural alpha wave rhythms (8–12 Hz).
  3. Severely Delayed Reflexes: Pilots who consumed garlic showed reaction times delayed by two to three times their normal baseline, alongside attentional fatigue and mental fog.

Because of this clinical documentation, flight surgeons with major aerospace and military institutions historically advised aviators not to eat garlic before high-precision flight missions.

Maitri Upanishad, Chapter 6, Verse 34

चित्तस्य हि प्रसादेन हन्ति कर्म शुभाशुभम् ।
प्रसन्नात्माऽऽत्मनि स्थित्वा सुखमव्ययमश्नुते ॥ ३४ ॥

cittasya hi prasādena hanti karma śubhāśubham
prasannātmā 'tmani sthitvā sukham avyayam aśnute

  • cittasya — of the consciousness and subtle mind; hi — certainly; prasādena — by tranquility and serenity; hanti — destroys; karma — the reactions of karma; śubha-aśubham — good and bad; prasanna-ātmā — a serene, joyful soul; ātmani — in the Self; sthitvā — situated; sukham avyayam — imperishable, eternal bliss; aśnute — experiences and tastes.

Translation: "By the serenity and stillness of the mind (citta-prasāda), one destroys all reactions of past karma. Remaining tranquil within the self, one experiences eternal bliss."

When modern EEG technology confirms that garlic disrupts alpha brain-wave coherence and scatters attention, it validates the ancient Vedic observation: alliums agitate the subtle neuro-circuitry, making deep meditation impossible.
