Padma Purana
अज्ञानादपि यः खादेत् सोऽपि दोषेण लिप्यते ।
तस्मात् सर्वप्रयत्नेन विचार्यैव समाचरेत् ॥
ajñānād api yaḥ khādet so 'pi doṣeṇa lipyate
tasmāt sarva-prayatnena vicāryaiva samācaret
- ajñānāt api — even out of ignorance; yaḥ khādet — whoever consumes; saḥ api — he also; doṣeṇa — by the reaction and contamination; lipyate — is tainted; tasmāt — therefore; sarva-prayatnena — with all careful endeavor; vicārya eva — after investigating thoroughly; samācaret — one should act.
Translation: "Even if one consumes impure food out of ignorance, one is still tainted by the subtle reaction. Therefore, with all endeavor, one must carefully investigate before partaking."
Ingredients to Watch Out For
- "Natural Flavors" and "Spices": Generic terms can legally conceal garlic powder, onion powder, and animal broth concentrates. Look for items certified explicitly as Jain or Sattvik.
- Tomato Ketchup & Pasta Sauces: Almost 95% of commercial ketchups contain onion powder and garlic puree. Choose Jain-certified ketchup or make a quick tomato-ginger reduction at home.
- Chips and Savory Snacks: Potato chips and processed snacks are heavily dusted with onion and garlic powders. Opt for salted chips or traditional Indian snacks made with hing and ajwain.
- Commercial Spice Blends: Some commercial curry powders secretly blend dehydrated garlic powder. Grind whole spices at home.
