Why No Onion & Garlic • Part 13

What About Shallots, Leeks, Scallions, and Spring Onions?

13. What About Shallots, Leeks, Scallions, and Spring Onions?

The Neophyte & Critic Objection

"Can practicing devotees eat shallots (small sambar onions), leeks, scallions, chives, or green spring onions? Aren't they much milder and greener than big bulb onions?"

The Botanical Genus Allium

From both modern botanical taxonomy and ancient Vedic shastra, these plants belong to the exact same botanical genus: Allium (family Amaryllidaceae).

Every single member of this genus produces the exact same sulfur-rich organosulfur molecules (allyl methyl sulfides, allicin, and thiosulfinates) that impart pungent odor, eye-stinging volatile vapors, and nervous excitation.

📜 Scriptural Citations & Authentic Shlokas

1. Manu-smriti, Chapter 5, Verse 5

लशुनं गृञ्जनं चैव पलाण्डुं कवकानि च ।
अभक्ष्याणि द्विजातीनाममेध्यप्रभवाणि च ॥ ५ ॥

laśunaṁ gṛñjanaṁ caiva palāṇḍuṁ kavakāni ca
abhakṣyāणि dvijātīnām amedhya-prabhavāni ca

  • gṛñjanam — leeks, chives, shallots, and wild garlic varieties.

Translation: "Garlic (laśuna), leeks (gṛñjana), onions (palāṇḍu), and mushrooms (kavaka) are strictly uneatable for spiritual seekers, because they are born of impure elements and degrade the consciousness."

2. Padma Purana, Patala-khanda

गृञ्जनं लशुनं चैव पलाण्डुं च विशेषतः ।
ये खादन्ति नरा मूढा नरकं यान्ति दारुणम् ॥

gṛñjanaṁ laśunaṁ caiva palāṇḍuṁ ca viśeṣataḥ
ye khādanti narā mūḍhā narakaṁ yānti dāruṇam

  • gṛñjanam — leeks and scallions; laśunam — garlic; palāṇḍum — onions; viśeṣataḥ — especially; ye khādanti — those who consume; narāḥ mūḍhāḥ — foolish persons; narakam yānti — enter into hellish conditions; dāruṇam — severe and terrible.

Translation: "Those foolish persons who consume leeks (gṛñjana), garlic (laśuna), and especially onions (palāṇḍu) descend into a painful hellish condition, because they pollute their inner consciousness."

A green stalk or a smaller size does not change the essential tamasic vibration of an allium plant. Practicing Vaishnavas abstain from the entire Allium genus without exception.
