Why No Onion & Garlic

Can We Offer Onion and Garlic to Bhagavan Sri Krishna?

3. Can We Offer Onion and Garlic to Bhagavan Sri Krishna?

The Common Objection

"Doesn't God accept anything if it is offered with sincere love? If I cook a dish with onion and garlic and offer it with love, will Krishna really reject it?"

Understanding Genuine Love in Bhakti-Yoga

In material relationships, true love means pleasing the beloved according to the beloved's desires, not imposing our own conditioned preferences on them. If someone loves their friend, they bring gifts that the friend likes—not gifts that the friend has explicitly forbidden.

Bhagavan Sri Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the supreme proprietor and enjoyer (bhoktāraṁ yajña-tapasām). He has revealed clearly what He accepts and what He rejects.

Scriptural Injunctions on Offering

In Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 9, Verse 26, Bhagavan Sri Krishna explicitly specifies what He welcomes:

patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ
yo me bhaktyā prayacchati
tad ahaṁ bhakty-upahṛtam
aśnāmi prayatātmanaḥ

"If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, I will accept it."

Notice what the Lord mentions: simple, sattvik, life-giving gifts of nature—vegetables, fruits, flowers, clean water, and pure dairy. He does not ask for animals, intoxicated drinks, or pungent alliums.

Furthermore, in the authoritative manual of Vaishnava worship compiled by Srila Sanatana Gosvami, Hari-bhakti-vilasa (Vilasa 8, Verses 156-160), there is an explicit list of prohibited items for deity offering (naivedya-varjana):

  • Garlic (laśuna)
  • Onion (palaṇḍu)
  • Mushrooms (kavaka)
  • Red lentils (masur dal)
  • Turnips and leeks (grinjana)
  • Stale, unwashed, or tasted food

Offering these prohibited items constitutes a severe offense at the lotus feet of the Lord (sevāparādha).

The Law of Karma and Prasadam

In Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 3, Verse 13, Krishna states: "The devotees of the Lord are released from all kinds of sins because they eat food which is offered first for sacrifice. Others, who prepare food for personal sense enjoyment, verily eat only sin."

If we cook onions and garlic, we cannot offer them to Krishna. If we cannot offer them to Krishna, the food remains unoffered (bhoga). Consuming unoffered food binds us to the wheel of material karma and clouds our spiritual intellect.
