The Purāṇic Origin: Churning of the Ocean and Rahu
2. The Purāṇic Origin: Churning of the Ocean and Rahu
The Common Objection
"Where does the story come from that onion and garlic originated from demonic blood or nectar? Is there genuine scriptural backing in the Puranas?"
The Purāṇic Account
The history of onion and garlic is described across several authentic Vedic literatures, including the Padma Purana (Srishti-khanda, Chapter 19), the Kurma Purana (Purva-bhaga, Chapter 17), and the Varaha Purana.
During the churning of the ocean of milk (Samudra Manthan), the demigods (devas) and demons (asuras) cooperated to obtain the nectar of immortality (amrita). When the nectar emerged, Bhagavan Sri Vishnu assumed the enchanting form of Mohini-murti to distribute the nectar solely to the demigods, who uphold cosmic righteousness.
The demon Rahu disguised himself as a demigod and sat in line between Surya (the sun god) and Chandra (the moon god). As Mohini-murti poured nectar into Rahu's mouth, Surya and Chandra recognized the demon and alerted the Lord. Mohini-murti immediately severed Rahu's head with the Sudarshana Chakra before the nectar could travel past his throat.
How Onion and Garlic Sprouted
Because the divine nectar had touched Rahu's mouth and throat, his severed head achieved immortality. However, as the neck was cut, drops of nectar mixed with the demon's blood and flesh fell to the earth:
- From the drops that fell onto the soil, two plants sprouted: garlic (laśuna) and onion (palaṇḍu).
- Because they came from nectar (amrita), both onion and garlic possess potent physical curative, antibiotic, and rejuvenating properties on the gross physical body.
- Because they were contaminated by contact with the throat and blood of the demon Rahu, they carry demonic and tamasic vibrations that degrade human consciousness and incite lower animalistic passions.
Scriptural Citation
In the Padma Purana, Srishti-khanda, Chapter 19, it is explicitly stated: "Because they sprouted from the drops of nectar touched by the asura, they have medicinal properties; but because they are contaminated by the blood of the demon, they are strictly forbidden for one who desires spiritual purification."
The Kurma Purana, Purva-bhaga, Chapter 17, Verse 21 similarly declares: "Onions, garlic, mushrooms, and leeks should never be consumed by spiritual seekers, for they pollute the mind and body."
The Spiritual Takeaway
Just as pure water poured into a skull becomes contaminated and untouchable, the celestial nectar contaminated by the demon became an agent of bodily stimulation and spiritual ignorance.
